I have four children within the ages 2-5

with my oldest starting 

Kindergarten 

and the others soon to follow

I wanted to be able to help my kindergartener

with his phonics and assist in the preparations

of the younger siblings who will all be starting school within the next three years.

Reading Horizons has an absolutely awesome program, 

Discover Intensive Phonics for Yourself,

which I used to work with my oldest child to help prepare him for kindergarten and also as 

an added instruction in the evenings when he got home from school.

 So, what exactly is Discover Intensive Phonics for Yourself?

This program is an explicit, systematic phonics program that employs a multi-sensory approach to teaching basic words attack/reading skills. This program can be used for whole group instruction or for small group instruction.

 

When I first received my Reading Horizon's Package,

I was super excited when I opened it up, 

and then I saw all the books and posters, 

I will admit,

I was a little bit overwhelmed.

 After sitting in my livingroom floor

staring at all this material, I finally caught the nerve to just open up the folder and glance over everything and get a feel as to what I had just gotten myself into.

(Elementary Education)

 Discover Intensive Phonics for Yourself Sound Essentials

(Elementary Education)

4 Story Books: 

Little Red Book: Stories 1-9

Little Orange Book:  Stories 28-32

Discover Intensive Phonics for Yourself  Elementary Enrichment CD

Phonics Posters.

 

Once I familiarized myself with how to actually instruct with these materials 

I got my son to come over to the table so I could start interacting with him and the materials.

At first, 

he seemed a bit confused but once we started using the curriculum

and he started understanding what was going on

he was having a complete blast! 

I definitely found that the more encouraging I was for him the more positive reaction he had towards this program.

It definitely says a lot when the other three started showing interest in what we were doing.

This program features activities for a range of ages and is ideal for 

Children ages four to nine

Kindergarten through third grade regular classroom and whole-group instruction

Kindergarten through Sixth grade SPED and small group instruction
